You're right, the manual uses "channel" for two things: "MIDI channel" and inputs/outputs (created with inew and onew functions). This is because, in early versions of midish inputs/output were just symbolic names given to MIDI channels, so it used to make sense to just talk about channels. It's not the case anymore, but it seems I missed to update many references these "channels".
